Multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, producer and conductor, Ralph Farris has spent the last three decades on modern music’s front lines, working with a wide-range of talents, from Paul McCartney and Leonard Bernstein to Chicago’s Kaotic Drumline and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. An award-winning graduate of The Juilliard School and a three-time Tanglewood Fellow, Ralph is a founding member and Artistic Director of the genre-bending string quartet ETHEL. The onetime Music Director and solo fiddle of Roger Daltrey’s band, Ralph was also an original company member of Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway. He has performed in concert with Paul Simon, Pete Townsend, Alice Cooper, Sinead O’Conner, Joe Jackson and Lou Reed. Beyond his many performance credits, he’s provided string arrangements for the GRAMMY®-nominated Five For Fighting hit, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)”, and worked as a music supervisor on Martin Scorsese’s The Key to Reserva. As a composer, Ralph has received commissions from the Jerome Foundation, dance evangelists Monkeyhouse, Las Vegas darlings Jarrett & Raja, the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and the NEA. His scoring credits include Noelle Brower’s Everything is Ordinary, Anika Burt’s Begin Again, and Jehane Noujaim’s Pangea Day industrial. Ralph composed incidental music for The Aquila Theatres production of A Female Philoctetes, produced at BAM in April 2014, as well as music for their 2014-15 production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Current projects include a children’s ballet, Snow White for Pineapple Dance, and a Ringling Museum commission to collaboratively score ETHEL’s CIRCUS: The Lives Behind the Big Top.
